Compared to similar films about the birth and development of Taiwanese identity by Hou Hsiao-hsien, Wang Tung feels more approachable since the big historical lines are conveyed through human experience in a more intimate way. Hou's shots are already more "detached" in the way that they seem to be more interested in an individual's place in history and these bigger developments and connections whereas Wang's film is clearly more character-driven although it has a collective nature.
